A Personal Reflection on the Catholicism of a Nation with an Eighty Percent Catholic Population

Part I:  The Philippine Reproductive Health Bill

“There are not over a hundred people [in the United States] who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church, which is of course, quite a different thing.” – Arch Fulton J. Sheen

The Catholic Church has always been consistent about her teachings.  And the Pope, who is the Bishop of Rome, does nothing other than to uphold it and make sure that the teachings of Christ continue to be the same and be proclaimed to the whole world through the Church.  There are no new laws, no new teachings other than those that illumine what Christ have been teaching us from the very beginning of the Christian community. The responsibility of the clergy is the same as the Pope.  To be a disciple of Christ is to be nothing more than to proclaim what He has revealed and proclaimed to us.  This is what is to be remembered and be reminded of by all who claims that the Church is outdated, that it has to change in order to be more appealing, that it has to refrain from being blind to the modernization of society.  To even think that the Church should change at all in terms of her beliefs on morality is simply a case of a mistaken identity bestowed upon a community that exists for the purpose of staying true and faithful to the founder.

Christians and non-Christians alike, who misunderstood what the Church is and what purpose she is serving always have a feast on judging the Church whenever a new attempt arises from the secular world and the so-called state to bring the Church into its knees and submit to it’s will when it should be the other way around.

Many, truly do not hate the Church.  There are only those who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church.

In the Philippines, when the Reproductive Health Bill was introduced, or re-introduced I should say, with it’s clear intention of promoting contraceptives and controlling the population, the Church through the clergy and faithful lay Catholics in the Philippines confirmed and proclaimed what the Church has always believed about the dignity of human being and the importance of morality in the society when they expressed their concern about the attempt of the state to undermine the rights of the very citizens they are saying they want to serve, many have attacked the Church hoping to ostracize her but they have achieved nothing other than to display their true misunderstanding of the Church.

The Church in its attempt to stay true and faithful to Christ only defends the dignity of every human being.  It is a responsibility that she has over all of humanity, Christian or not, as every mother has over their own child.

If that is what she has always been trying to do then why do we have this conflict with others?  Apropos to all what the discussion has now become between it’s proponents and opponents, it is the difference in the definition of that dignity, I believe, is the root of the disagreement.  To the proponents of the RH Bill the dignity lies in the freedom to engage in a sexual act without the worries of the consequences of the act, pregnancy.  To be a responsible parent, as it seems, for them is to be able to defy the natural course of things through artificial means in order to continue engaging in an act that they believe is a right of every human being that shouldn’t be restrained or constrained by its consequences.  Simply put, licentiousness. And it didn’t matter that the bill itself is not only redundant but it also violates the constitution of the Philippines.  From the freedom of religion, the issue of abortion, and its attempt to transfer into their hands the power over decisions on family matters from the family.  Unfortunately, many are more than willing to the point of actually handling it over on a silver platter.  Not even a resignation or surrender but a willful handling over, begging for their rights and freedom to be taken.

Yes, this may not be the case they would say but the truth is  many are misinformed.   In the end, without all the masks the bill is trying to hide behind it  is what it is.  Knowing or unknowingly, supporting the RH Bill is  handling over our rights and freedom to the state.

WANTED: Altar Servers for Filipino Priests in New York

San Lorenzo Ruiz is an altar server himself as a boy at the convent of Binondo Church. It is only befitting, if we are to follow his example, to experience serving on this blessed ministry.

To be an Altar Server is not only to serve the priest by helping him preside over the liturgy but to serve the congregation by helping everyone to worship and celebrate in the best way possible. It is first and foremost a service to our Lord; an opportunity to take an essential role in the most sacred celebration of our Catholic Faith.

Responsibilities include leading the processional of the cross, candles, incense and thurible during special mass celebrations; assisting the priest in receiving the gifts of bread, wine and other offerings; preparing the chalice and cruets; and performing special tasks during the Consecration of gifts.

I am no longer a boy but a young adult here in New York and I must tell you how rewarding it is to serve during Mass. It is never too late. Serving during Mass gives us the opportunity to participate more fully in the most blessed celebration of our Faith. It allows us to understand what it means to serve in our own little way with the dignity of a true gentleman. Suffice it to say that Holiness begins in that little surrender of our time and effort in order to yield to that higher calling of giving ourselves in to the service of the Lord.

With hopes and prayers I invite you, all gentlemen, to share on this blessed ministry, to support our Filipino priests in the New York City area as Altar Servers.

While we will always go where we are needed (i.e. serving non-Filipino priests) we would like to begin our service to our Filipino priests here in New York. Please let me know if you are interested and I will send you information about the next orientation and training.

The Beets and Booze in a Church?!

Yes.  The band, The Beets, played in a Catholic Church in Chinatown.   St. James Church on James Street in the city was the venue for their rock concert last Friday the 15th with other bands like Real Estate, Beach Fossils, and others scheduled for that night.  And yes, an open bar from 8-9pm.

Is this a new and upcoming trend for sacrilege?  It seems that the church is now being marketed as a new venue for rock concerts.   It is very sad and unfortunate that something like this would happen.  Let us offer our prayers as repentance for this despicable act and hopefully actions will be taken in order to prevent this from happening again.  Like what my good friend and brother in faith, Juan, had said, I too, felt so violated by what happened.   Juan is a Catholic Young Adult leader in New York leading DHT, Defenders of the Holy Trinity.  Please spread the word and ask for more prayers.  Juan  has a discussion thread here.

More pictures from the concert here.

Letter of St. Thomas Aquinas to Brother John on How to Study

Because you have asked me, my brother John, most dear to me in Christ, how to set about acquiring the treasure of knowledge, this is the advice I pass on to you: That you should choose to enter by the small rivers, and not go right away into the sea, because you should move from easy things to difficult things.

Such is therefore my advice on your way of life:

  • I suggest you be slow to speak, and slow to go to the room where people chat.
  • Embrace purity of conscience; do not stop making time for prayer.
  • Love to be in your room frequently, if you wish to be led to the wine cellar.
  • Show yourself to be likable to all, or at least try; but do not show yourself as too familiar with anyone; because too much familiarity breeds contempt, and will slow you in your studies; and don’t get involved in any way in the deeds and words of worldly people.
  • Above all, avoid idle conversation; do not forget to follow the steps of holy and approved men.
  • Never mind who says what, but commit to memory what is said that is true.
  • Work to understand what you read, and make yourself sure of doubtful points.
  • Put whatever you can into the cupboard of your mind as if you were trying to fill a cup.
  • “Seek not the things that are higher than you.”

Follow the steps of blessed Dominic, who produced useful and marvelous shoots, flowers and fruits in the vineyard of the Lord of Hosts for as long as life was his companion. If you follow these things, you will attain whatever you desire.

Invitation to become Liturgical Ministers

Sharing Opportunities to Become Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord
In Preparation for Regular Filipino Young Adult Mass at the Filipino Chapel

CFYA (Catholic Filipino Young Adults) welcomes you and shares with you another opportunity to become co-workers in the vineyard of the Lord.

A special invitation is extended to all Filipino young adults to become Liturgical Ministers at the Filipino Chapel in New York in preparation for the regular Filipino Young Adult Mass.

The Ministry of the Altar Server

To be an Altar Server is not only to serve the priest by helping him preside over the liturgy but to serve the congregation by helping everyone to worship and celebrate in the best way possible. It is also worth noting that first and foremost it is a service to our Lord; an opportunity to take an essential role in the most sacred celebration of our Catholic Faith.

The Ministry of the Reader

According to the Introduction to the Lectionary, “the Sacred Scriptures, above all in their liturgical proclamation, are the source of life and strength…Love of the Scriptures is therefore a force reinvigorating and renewing the entire People of God” (#47). The Assembly truly requires readers. This ministry is comprised of suitable lay people responsible in proclaiming the Word of God through the act of reading the Liturgy of the Word.

The Ministry of Hospitality

The Ministers of Hospitality is the first official representative of the community that worshippers meet. It is a ministry of genuine joy and care for others all centered in Christ. It is an expression of reverence for the presence of Christ in each member of the congregation. It is more than simply being friendly or sociable but nurturing Christian love and concern for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Among many important responsibilities include: directing and facilitating processions, collecting the monetary offering, overlooking the physical aspects of the chapel space (temperature, if doors are to be closed or opened, lighting, etc), monitoring the cleanliness and readiness of the chapel for the services, distributing the bulletin, welcoming and seating guests, and responding to emergencies. Truly it is a ministry of love for the people of God.
